History

Paços dos Concelho - fachada

Royal Decree from July 26 created the district of Loures in 1886.

It was then made of parishes that had previously belonged to the meanwhile extinct districts of Odivelas and Belém. The area that forms the district has always been connected to the evolution of Lisbon and its term.

The fertility of the lands, the abundancy of the waters and the purity of the country air gave form to this rural region north of Lisbon that, from the reign of D. Afonso Henriques until the reign of D. Maria II, was part of Lisbon’s term. It is therefore natural that many monarchs and nobles chose these lands as places for leisure, rest and escape from diseases and plagues, the countless villas testifying to that. Those villas confirm above all the importance of this term the kings distributed, also as a way to exert with more efficiency their power, the exploitation of the lands and the payment of taxes. The cultural characteristics of this region are a result of the extended Muslim occupation and of the progressive mix between different ethnicities and religions, from which the Mozarabic were born, that through time preserved their own cultural traits.

In 1886, because of the growing economic importance of the territory, Loures became a district (made of the parishes that belonged to the meanwhile extinct districts of Olivais and Belém).

The environmental, economic and social diversity of the newly formed district made it possible for a great affluence of wills, stories and journeys that through time gave this vast territory an identity.

In October 4 1910, a historical fact of great importance happens in Loures: after the occupation of the City Hall Council Chamber, a flag bearing the republican colours, green and red, was raised and the establishment of the Republic was declared by the Junta Revolucionária. In the new millennium, Loures takes pride in giving continuity to the ivaluable path treaded by our ancestors, working to make sure that the future will continue being built in here: saving memories, digging finds, building knowledge and sharing stories.
